This month we will discuss the novella "Anthem," by Ayn Rand. This is a short, powerful work that paints a picture of a dystopic future society in which individualistic thinking has been curtailed to such a degree that the pronoun "I" has vanished from the language. The concept of "self" no longer has meaning--every individual is but a slave to the collective whole. Read about the struggle of our hero, Equality 7-2521, as he tries to reconcile his innate ideas of individualism with the suffocating collectivism of his world. Discuss the story's allegorical implications and how it relates to objectivism in our society. Myopic Books is a great used bookstore near the intersection of Milwaukee, North Avenue, and Damen. It is less than a block from the Damen stop on the Blue Line. We will meet at the sitting area on the second floor. PLEASE RSVP FOR THIS EVENT.
